AI vs. Translation... or AI + Translation?
The evolution of technology is, and has always been, exponential. The more technology we have, the more technology we create. Our ancestors were either afraid of the Internet and cellphones, or they seriously underestimated their power and relevance. I get this question a lot... "So, as a translator... are you afraid of AI?" The short answer is: "No." The long answer is....
AI is a tool, not a replacement. Technology has had a huge impact on globalization, and it will continue to do so; therefore, language experts are in need more than ever. It goes without saying that being bilingual is NOT enough to be a professional translator or interpreter. Anyone that has pursued this career knows this, and they also have experienced a lack of appreciation for their profession and their skillset. I have had people tell me that my career is not a "real job" and that "anyone can translate". The longer I work in the field, the more I realize the complexity of language knowledge; it includes (at a basic level) understanding grammar, spelling, and syntax rules in two (sometimes completely unrelated) languages, as well as cultural intuition, idioms, humor, diverse vocabulary in a wide range of dialects, and overall meaning and big picture communication rather than word-for-word translation.
To say that a machine is capable of deeply connecting with people, grasping fully the meaning of a text or conversation, and mastering the complexity of jargon in certain fields is simply wrong. Not only that, but some high-risk sectors cannot afford any sort of mistake in either written or oral communication. Some professions in which an error in translation or interpretation could prove to be fatal include legal, aviation, engineering, diplomatic, military, public safety, and medical fields.
Yes, AI has helped me THRIVE in my career as a translator. However, as someone that has certifications in medical, legal, and business translations from the University of Arizona, as well as mastery of multiple languages, I can guarantee that AI cannot do the job alone. AI is shifting my profession rather than eliminating it. Together, AI and I can accomplish incredible things; things we would not be able to accomplish on our own. Those who reject it will not survive and those who over-embrace it will not survive either. It is the perfect balance between technological advancements and human expertise that will make a translation and interpretation exceptional and precise.
So, instead of being afraid, I am focusing on learning how to use this fabulous tool to help me stand out. I improved my qualifications by obtaining official certifications in fluency and translation in various languages and in various professional sectors. Another thing to consider is flexibility, knowing that change is coming will help translators shift their mentality and develop new skills as proofreaders and even researchers on specific subject matters!
It is safe to say that I love my profession. Instead of stepping back, I will make the appropriate adjustments and improvements I can make as an individual and a polyglot to gain more momentum as a professional. Languages are my passion, and in a world where so many people fear the unknown and push away things they do not understand, I have decided to go above and beyond to help people connect and share their story accurately and correctly.
